Hike Prep

Here are some happy things from today: This morning Zed picked me up at the place I was getting my car worked on.  He bought me a peppermint steamer on the way home.  It was yummy.  After that I spent most of the day watching Keziah play a video game.  It has a story based between the fighting parts.  I think I just liked being with family. When my car was finished, Bel and I decided to go on a short walk.  We drove north of the city to the rail trail.  There is a bridge there that I thought was interesting and wanted to show Bel.  When I was about halfway across the bridge I remembered that I didn't ever want to go over it again.  We made it over and continued to walk a little before turning around.  It was getting dark and I wanted to be over the bridge again while there was still light.  It was a nice little walk.  The fresh air was good. Statue of Hannah Duston. Some of the things Bel and I have been meaning to do was to se...

Cold Night

Here are some happy things from today: Sleeping outside last night was a good learning experience.  The temperature was supposedly around 21 degrees.  I will need to find more light weight things to keep me warm when the nights are cold and I am backpacking.  I didn't have to go to the house last night to get warm because I had my heavy wool cloak to use along with my regular sleeping bag, sack, and air mattress.  That cloak most likely won't be with me when I backpack.   Frost on my tent when I got up. HotHands are fantastic!  Those are something I can put into my pack.  The one I had last night lasted more than the advertised twelve hours.  It was still warm on my drive home in the afternoon. After continuing to visit with friends and helping with cleanup all morning I made the drive home, unpacked the car, and rested most of the day.  I fell asleep before I could finish writing this.  It was a nice but tiring weekend.  I fel...

Happy Birthday, Bel!

Thirty years ago today I gave birth to one baby who today turns 30 and goes by Bel.  We thought Bel was going to have a twin sibling.  It turns out that ultrasounds aren't always correct, or I have a mirror in my back?  😉  Today my youngest lives in Maryland and even though they just finished visiting two days ago, I miss them.  Bel is a marvelous hiking buddy.  Next year we are hoping to hike the Appalachian Trail together.   Other happy things from today: I had my first complete physical since before the pandemic.  I say complete physical, but I always feel like something was forgotten.  Anyway, the doctor thinks I'm good to live for another day.  🤣 This weekend I have plans to go hiking and camping with a friend.  In preparation, I tried to set up my tent in my bedroom.  That was a failure so I took it outside.  I think it will go up easier with stakes, but for now, I have refreshed my memory enough that I think ...

Clouds

Two happy things from yesterday that I forgot: I finished listening to The Book of Margery Kempe.   It gave me some insight on life as a woman in the middle ages, though not as much as I'd hoped.   It did mention that she visited Julian of Norwich, and so I am revisiting Julian with the book I started listening to today. With some of the raspberries we picked yesterday Keziah made a sekanjabin.  She also made a lemon-mint sekanjabin.  Here is a random site with a recipe for reference purposes.  I don't know what Keziah used for a recipe, and the link I posted is a different flavor.  Today my happy things include: While out and about this morning Keziah noticed a cloud that looks like it has a hole in it.  I got a picture, but there are lots of wires in it. Keziah and I got the tent out of the storage unit.  That puts us one step closer to being prepared for camping this weekend.   Some packing for the weekend and the errands I...
