Pet Day
For National Pet Day I decided to share some happy pet stories.
- Growing up my family had a dog named Skeeter. He was a mixed breed, probably Labrador retriever and German shepherd. I have some vague recollection that his name came from my not being able to say mosquito. Anyhow, Skeeter was mostly very tolerant of me, the youngest. I remember being able to use him as a pillow every now then. He didn't let me ride him though.
- When I was married, we had a cat named Jeffrey. I'm not sure what breed he was, but he was a tuxedo cat. He liked to catch mice. Before kids, we rented a second story apartment that had access to the attic. Somehow Jeffrey got a mouse and chased it into the bedroom. We were on a futon on the floor. The mouse ran right at me to hide behind my pillow. I don't think I ever moved so fast as I did that night! I was off the floor so fast. Jeffrey then proceeded to sit by the door and started to clean his paws. He brought us our dinner and we should be happy. My now ex-husband tried to get the mouse. The mouse ran to Jeffrey and tried to hide behind him. Jeffrey continued to clean himself. He was not concerned with the activity, my screaming, or the mouse hiding behind him. Eventually, the mouse was caught and thrown out the window. Years later, I can laugh about this story.
- About twenty years ago or so we got a puppy and named him Hunter. He grew to be a very good dog. We went on walks and played together. He was my faithful companion when the kids were out of the house and I lived alone. Hunter was a yellow Labrador retriever who loved to retrieve. He would occasionally run off to a neighbor's house and play with their black dog. They would run around in the heat on a summer's day. When they got tired, Hunter would find a shady spot to rest and the black dog would rest in the sun. We always thought that it was funny that the black dog wouldn't find shade, but the yellow one would. Recently I gave some of Hunter's ashes to a friend to make into glass beads. I'm going to incorporate some of them into the beads I wear with my Viking dresses.
- Now we have Nanni and Winston, a brown tabby and an orange tabby. Here is a picture of Nanni. She has been resting next to me while I write this.

Thank you for being part of my happy things. Stay safe.
