For September 27th

On September 27th I had no internet.  I took some time and wrote the Blog on my phone.  I thought it hadn't saved, but I just found it!  I'll be writing today's blog tomorrow though.  We hiked around eight miles today and I'm exhausted.  My apologies that the pictures aren't always in the correct order:

September 27th.

When I chose Mountain Pond as the place we would be camping, I didn't expect that we would be the only ones camping here.  The backcountry can be a scary place and I am so very happy that I asked Stephanie to join me.  As I begin this entry, there are birds chirping, getting ready for sleep.  That, the sound of leaves and needles falling to the ground, and the occasional mosquito or other insect is what I hear.  Soon, there will be footsteps as Stephanie makes her way back to camp.  We have hung the food away from our camping area and our tents are waiting for us to enter them once it is dark.

Here are some happy things from earlier today:

  • Our drive here was pretty.  New Hampshire is a beautiful state and I'm glad I live here again.  I've also lived in Massachusetts, Texas, and California.  Every state has its own beauty, New Hampshire is home for me.
A random lake we stopped at for lunch.

  • We stopped to hike Cathedral Ledge.  It was a last minute decision.  We knew we would be hiking somewhere and found that on the map right before being able to turn down the road to Echo Lake State Park, where the trail begins.  We had lunch at a picnic table by the lake.  The trail goes part way around the lake and then veers off for the ledge.  Somewhere I think I read that it was only around 670 feet up?  It felt like more going up, and less coming down.  The views from the top were lovely.  There was a group of kids on one side that seemed to be taking a course on rock repelling and climbing.  There were adults in another area rock climbing up.  Rock climbing is not a hobby I see myself ever picking up.  I'll try to keep climbing though.
Echo Lake and Cathedral Ledge (I think)

That should be White Horse Ledge.

There is woodpecker amid the green foliage.

  • We headed to Mountain Pond next.  We got our backpacks ready and headed out.  There is a shelter, but we are at a designated camping spot about half a mile beyond the that.  It is tree covered, so no star gazing.  There is also no internet, so this won't get posted until tomorrow.  It seems weird to be in my sleeping bag before 8 PM, but we didn't make a fire.  No need to be out with the bugs.

Thank you for being part of my happy things. Stay safe.
